Opening Into Light

Sunday, November 17th

Opening Into Light

Pat Kendall is our featured speaker this Sunday, in celebration of her recently published memoir, Opening Into Light, Reflections from a Lifetime of Learning to See.  She’ll read passages from her book and share some of her journey, “beginning in darkness and hidden in pain”, down a “long road to healing, joy, and freedom.” Pat will have a book sale and signing after our gathering, and she’ll generously donate all profits from book purchases Sunday morning to Paths of Heart!  We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be an enlightening morning!

The Circle of Life and Love

Sunday, November 10th

The Circle of Life and Love

We have always loved the symbology of circles and have visited this theme periodically at Paths of Heart.  Circle sayings and poetry kept jumping out at us this week so we figured it was a sign to circle around this theme once again!

Quotes to ponder

“We are all joined in a circle of stories.” ~ Linda Joy Myers

“Circles, like the soul, are never ending and turn round and round without a stop.”~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“There are patterns which emerge in one’s life, circling and returning anew, an endless variation of a theme” ~ Jacqueline Carey

Dia de los Muertos

Sunday, November 3rd

Dia de los Muertos

Here at Paths of Heart, we love the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  We look forward to this colorful, annual celebration every year, where we honor our loved ones who have passed with life-affirming joy.  With origins in pre-Hispanic Mexico, Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life AND death, acknowledging death as a natural phase in life’s long continuum.  A centerpiece of the celebration is an altar, or ofrenda, and we will have one set up for you to bring your photos, trinkets, or other mementos and offerings for your loved ones (including pets).  We’ll delve a bit into the history of Dia de los Muertos and how we can incorporate its meaning into our lives today.  We’ll also discuss our participation in the YOU MATTER Marathon this month, and will have cards for you to pass along.  Please remember this Sunday marks the end of Daylight Saving Time, so set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed on Saturday night, and enjoy that extra hour of sleep ~ we know we will!  🙂

Quotes to ponder

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” ~ Thomas Campbell

“God pours life into death and death into life without a drop being spilled.”

“After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.”

Conscious Evolution

Sunday, October 27th

Conscious Evolution

Mark’s musings this week…. When John O’Donohue writes, “For millions of years, before your arrived here, the dream of your individuality was carefully prepared”, my first thought is a rather doubtful, “Yeah, right!?” and then, “We are the offspring of biped desiring trilobites?…go figure!”  But then a deeper thought occurs…”Well, we are here after all.  And if a galaxy or a universe can arise out of something infinitesimally tiny, which is what modern physics is currently contemplating…well maybe there’s something to “that”!  And maybe keeping an open mind is a valuable thing!  And perhaps our open hearts can come along for the ride on this mind/heart boggling adventure.  More will be revealed…

Quotes to ponder

“It is our ultimate purpose to continually evolve as a species both physically and emotionally, as change is the mechanism for growth and development, and if we fear change we stunt our own growth and with it, human evolution.” ~ Kat Lahr

“You are a significant, unique, independent, individual soul, who has ventured into this world to expand your awareness of yourself and truth. You are an opportunity for the expansion of consciousness; you are an opportunity for evolution.”
~ Lorraine Nilon

“Our greatest human adventure is the evolution of consciousness. We are in this life to enlarge the soul, liberate the spirit, and light up the brain.” ~ Tom Robbins

Housekeeping (Heartkeeping)

Sunday, October 20th

Housekeeping (Heartkeeping)

Doesn’t it feel good when you’ve tidied up the house a bit and feel a little more organized at home?  Paths of Heart is approaching its 6th full year of existence and as we vision into 2020, we’d like to reflect on how we’ve changed and grown, and get your ideas on how we’ll move into the future.  What draws you to our Sunday morning gatherings?  What feels comfortable, and what might you like to experience differently?  What ideas do you have to help us maintain a sustainable future?  We welcome all your supportive thoughts and hope you’ll join us in doing a little “cleaning and upkeep” as we build our community together!  If you can’t be with us this Sunday, feel free to email us your thoughts.  Thank you!

Quotes to ponder

“When I was cleaning out my garage it reminded me of spiritual housekeeping. As I cleaned I came upon things to sort out, things to let go of, things to keep, and things that I wondered how I ever collected them.” ~ Mary Morrissey

“What’s lurking in the cupboard of our mind and soul? What junk drawer in the back of our heart is swarmed with knick-knacks and old paperwork? Where did we put our keys to future success?…” ~ Amanda Rodriguez

Fitting Together the Pieces of Our Lives

Sunday, October 6th

Fitting Together the Pieces of Our Lives

As we observe (and occasionally help with!) the patchwork of our backyard patio project (as inside projects also continue!), we’ve noticed how life can sometimes feel like a puzzle, or a quilt in progress, and it can be a “struggle to juggle” all the different aspects of our lives and fit them into one cohesive, beautiful work of art.  Give us your tips and tricks on reducing the accompanying stress and help us vision the future Paths of Heart potlucks and house concerts after the transformation!  Woo hoo!  This Sunday, The Home Fires (Vicky Emerson and Sarah Morris) are here from Minneapolis to share their music with us.  We hope you can join us for their house concert this very Saturday night, too (details below)!

Quotes to ponder

“Let certain things be uncertain. Appreciate the puzzle that life is, insofar as I know, after a scheme of steps, all Crosswords have a solution, and every Sudoku makes a lot of sense.” ~ Jasleen Kaur Gumber

“If the reality of our life has become an unsettling arabesque puzzle and we still want to add more filigree embroidery to it, we might, some day, expect to stray from the point of recognition, lose the final thread, be expelled to the edge of delusion and forced to dance on the brim of chaos…” ~ Erik Pevernagie

“Isn’t life a collection of weird quizzes with no answers to half the questions?”
~ Pawan Mishra

September’s Swan Song

Sunday, September 29th

September’s Swan Song

September is nearly gone and there’s maybe a bit of melancholy in saying goodbye to summer, even as we anticipate the beautiful changes that autumn brings.  We’ll contemplate these transformations metaphorically and discuss how we can integrate change gracefully into our lives.

Quotes to ponder

“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”
~
Lauren DeStefano

“Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”
~ Wallace Stegner

“Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter’s deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world’s oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.”
~ Shauna Niequist

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

This is a family event featuring educational booths, music, dancing, puppets, crafts, speakers, open mic, and more to engage all ages in an afternoon of fun, inspiration and learning.

Thursday, October 3rd, 7-9 pm ~ Teresa Funke, a familiar face and frequent presenter at Paths of Heart, will launch her new book, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life at Everyday Joe’s Coffeehouse.  This is a free event, and Teresa and Colleen will be performing an abbreviated version of their “house concert” where Teresa reads short entries from her inspirational book and Colleen pairs songs that dovetail with her theme. Desserts and light snacks provided!

Creating Peace

Sunday, September 22nd

Creating Peace

September 21st is The International Day of Peace, established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution.  Each year, this “Peace Day” provides a “globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace”.  We’ll celebrate this day and converse about what we can do as individuals and in community to nurture this vital mission on a daily basis!

Quotes to ponder

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.” ~ Dalai Lama

“Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.” ~ John F. Kennedy

Saying Goodbye

Sunday, September 15th

Saying Goodbye

There will be many times throughout our lives when we’ll have to say goodbye ~ to loved ones that have passed from this earthly plane, to relationships that change, to friends and family who move away, to situations that no longer serve us….This Sunday we want to honor 2 very special people in our Paths of Heart Community ~ Sidney Waldrop, who passed away last Wednesday, and Judi Lucero, who will be moving from Fort Collins soon with her husband Rudy to be closer to family.  These two dear hearts have been a vital part of our community since its inception and will both be so dearly missed (Judi assures us she’ll be back to visit whenever she can!).  We’ll also explore the emotions that saying goodbye brings, however it manifests in our lives.

Quotes to ponder

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” ~ Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne)

“So long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart, I shall say that life is good.” ~ Helen Keller

“I have learned along my journey that letting go doesn’t mean loving less.” ~ Alex Elle

“There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thanks to all who’ve been attending our song circles over these many months.  What a joyous time we’ve had together!  Alas, we’ve decided to suspend them for awhile as we anticipate a very full schedule for the fall.  We are thinking our next one will be a holiday themed sing-a-long in early/mid December.  Thank you for your understanding!
