So Many Paths…

July 30th, 2023

I came across this Ella Wheeler Wilcox poem earlier this week:
“So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs. “
We love that Paths of Heart honors all paths in the spiritual journey and we agree, kindness is of utmost importance along the way. We often quote the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet who said, “This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” We’ll expound on these thoughts in our Paths of Heart ZOOM gathering this Sunday. We’d love for you to join in the conversation! Here’s the link:

Quotes to ponder

Life’s all about choices. Everyone’s destination is the same; only the paths are different.”
~ Sushmita Sen

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
~ Aesop

“Faith is a continuum, and we each fall on that line where we may. By attempting to rigidly classify ethereal concepts like faith, we end up debating semantics to the point where we entirely miss the obvious – that is, that we are all trying to decipher life’s big mysteries, and we’re each following our own paths of enlightenment.”
~ Dan Brown

“It takes courage to be kind.”
~ Maya Angelou

“If we are asking for the world to be kind, we must first ask what are we doing to add more kindness to the world. If we are asking for the world to be more loving, we must first ask what are we doing to add more love to the world. We are the vessels for the things we seek.”
~ Joél Leon

“When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.”
~ Abraham Joshua Heschel

Giving Opportunities
Paths of Heart continues to welcome and appreciate your generous donations as we work to bolster our finances and return to regular Sunday gatherings. During the pandemic, online donations became increasingly important to our organization, and are always gratefully accepted on our website, https://www.pathsofheart.org/donate/. There is an option for recurring monthly donations, if you so choose. We have also added Venmo as an easy way to donate to Paths of Heart! Just type in @PathsofHeart to find us in the Venmo app. Thanks so much for supporting the continuation of Paths of Heart.  Remember, we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so your donations are tax deductible!

Another easy way to further support Paths of Heart is through the King Soopers Community Rewards Program – If you shop at KS and have a rewards card, you can “link” it to Paths of Heart and King Soopers will donate a portion of your dollars spent (around 5%) to our non-profit. Go to https://www.kingsoopers.com/i/community/community-rewards to sign up and link your card. Our organization name is Paths of Heart and organization number is RG782. Let us know if you want help signing up! This one small gesture (by just 25 or so families at this point) helps to generate over $1,000 a year for Paths of Heart, so we appreciate your consideration in participating in this valuable program!!

“Paths of Heart” Labyrinth and Zen Meditation Garden
This was intentioned to be a community space, so know that you are always welcome to drop by and walk or sit – you do not need to let us know in advance. Do note that we have experienced the outer “halo” of glass blocks in the labyrinth to be slippery when wet, so it’s best to walk it on a dry day. We DO love all this rain, but we hope the weather will be more labyrinth-friendly soon!

Gratitudes

We’ve had some really meaningful musical experiences lately and more coming up in the next few weeks and months. What a joy it is to make music with family and friends and to share that with you all in different settings – house concerts, Celebrations of Life, birthday parties, weddings, music lessons. Life is good!

What are you grateful for today?

“When gratitude becomes an essential foundation in our lives, miracles start to appear everywhere.”
~ Emmanuel Dagher

“When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.”
~ Tony Robbins

“The real gift of gratitude is that the more grateful you are, the more present you become.”
~ Robert Holden

If you keep searching for everything beautiful in the world, you will eventually become it.”
~ Tyler Kent White

“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.”
~ Eileen Caddy

Restoration and Renewal

July 23rd, 2023

Mark and I were camping in Poudre Canyon last week and took a hike with friends on the Big South trail, which we had not visited since before the Cameron Peak Fire of 2020. I had some trepidation about the stark landscape that we might see, and yes, the blackened and charred remains of trees were plentiful. Yet the forest growth underneath and the abundance of wildflowers (including fireweed!) was astounding! It reminded us of the restoration and renewal that can take place in all of us after any kind of challenge, trauma, or devastation in our lives, if we allow it. It may take some time, but we’ll often uncover exquisite beauty and a myriad of blessings amid the chaos and destruction. Please come and share your experiences with us on Sunday! Nashville performing songwriter Buddy Mondlock will be our guest musician that morning and will also treat us to a house concert that evening at 7 p.m. with a potluck at 6. We hope you can make it to that, too – you’ll be glad you did!

To new growth ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“For within your flesh, deep within the center of your being, is the undaunted, waiting, longing, all-knowing. Is the ready, able, perfect. Within you, waiting its turn to emerge, piece by piece, with the dawn of every former test of trial and blackness, is the next unfolding, the great unfurling of wings, the re-forged backbone of a true Child of Light.”
~ Jennifer DeLucy

“Sometimes it takes a total break to lead to complete healing and restoration.”
~ Karen Pennington

“Despair is paralysis. It robs us of agency. It blinds us to our own power and the power of the earth… Restoration is a powerful antidote to despair. Restoration offers concrete means by which humans can once again enter into positive, creative relationship with the more-than-human world, meeting responsibilities that are simultaneously material and spiritual…”
~ Robin Wall Kimmerer

“Every part of your brokenness will play a part in your wholeness.”
~ Andrena Sawyer

“Every single cell in the human body replaces itself over a period of seven years. That means there’s not even the smallest part of you now that was part of you seven years ago.”
~ Steven Hall

Gratitudes

What a treat it was to get up into the mountains for 4 days – a great restoration for the soul! We had a delightful time with friends, shared delectable food, played “mountain bocce”, and hiked the Big South trail. We are so grateful to live so close to such beauty!

What are you grateful for today?

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.
~ Henry Ward Beecher

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
~ Melody Beattie

“In ordinary life, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”
~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Gratitude is the sweetest thing in a seekers life – in all human life. If there is gratitude in your heart, then there will be tremendous sweetness in your eyes.”
~ Sri Chinmoy

Finding Our Freedom

July 9th, 2023

On the heels of Independence Day, the concept of freedom is on our minds. As a side note, we experienced “freedom” from the internet and our (cable) office phone line for 2 days because of an outage, so I’m scrambling to get this newsletter out that I actually started on Wednesday morning! 🙂 Freedom has so many different meanings and some freedoms seem particularly and unfortunately challenged these days. Join us in lively conversation this Sunday! Our gathering will be followed by a festive potluck in the backyard.

Live free ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves”
~ Abraham Lincoln

“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.”
~ Robert A. Heinlein

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
~ Viktor Frankl

“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.”
~ Nelson Mandela

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

“There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask “What if I fall?”
Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?”

~ Erin Hanson

“The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.”
~ Joe Klass

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Our Paths of Heart “sabbatical” has ended, and we are meeting on a more regular basis now! We hope you’ll be able to get in the rhythm of celebrating life with us on Sundays 2-3 times a month. As you can see below, Gatherings have now been scheduled through September. We know some folks have asked for a “regular” schedule (such as the 2nd and 4th Sundays). However, we’ve experienced that vacations and special events often disrupt that “best laid plan” plan for all of us, so for now we are going with what works within our family schedule. Adjustments may be made as we continue to assess attendance and finances. We may also consider an earlier start time in the summer if that’s something the majority of folks would like. Let us know your thoughts!

Sunday, July 9th, 10:30 a.m. – In person POH Gathering with a potluck afterwards. Please bring your own (reusable, washable) plates. We’ll provide utensils, cloth napkins, cups, and a variety of beverages. We strive for near zero waste at our events, and we appreciate your cooperation in helping us do so!

Sunday, July 23rd, 10:30 a.m. – In person POH Gathering with Buddy Mondlock as our guest musician! He’ll also be with us in concert in the evening!

Sunday, July 30th, 10:30 a.m. – ZOOM POH Gathering

Sunday, August 6th, 10:30 a.m. – In person POH Gathering with a potluck afterwards

Gratitudes

Well, I didn’t think I’d still be talking about the rain for about 2 straight months, but we are still so grateful for it!! After being in a drought for many years, it’s really glorious to see the landscape so alive with color and the greenest of green! It fills me with joy and it makes my life so much easier without my complicated watering regimen. Just as long as the rain doesn’t interfere with tomorrow’s outdoor concert – ha ha!

Where Does the Time Go?

June 25th, 2023

It feels like I just wrote last week’s newsletter – how can a week go by so fast? Our Holland-Belgium trip seems like ages ago, and yet we’ve only been back for a month. The “feeling” of time is a weird thing…this Sunday on Zoom we’ll explore the concept of time and our perceptions of it! Here’s the link:

Time is on your side! ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Time is an illusion.”
~ Albert Einstein

“It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.”
~ George Harrison

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.”
~ Lao Tzu

“Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”
~ Marthe Troly-Curtin

“The timeless in you is aware of life’s timelessness. And knows that yesterday is but today’s memory and tomorrow is today’s dream.”
~ Khalil Gibran

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”
~ Eckhart Tolle

“Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.”
~ Anthony G. Oettinger

Giving Opportunities
Paths of Heart continues to welcome and appreciate your generous donations as we work to bolster our finances and get back to regular Sunday gatherings.

Gratitudes

The continuing rain has continued to give us a chance to continue slowing down and enjoy being inside (ha ha!) ~ reading, watching a good movie or two, working on that challenging puzzle. It’s been really beautiful watching and listening to the downpours…opening the doors and windows and smelling that freshness! Yesterday’s storm was a little scary though!! Yet when I took a walk around the yard to survey any damage, there was very little, and now I get the continued reprieve from watering!

The Rhythm of Life

June 11th, 2023

Mark and I are gradually and gratefully getting back into the rhythm of life (and Paths of Heart!) after our “sabbatical” and traveling schedule of Spring. Summer will officially start soon and we are catching up on all that requires attention at home and in the yard and gardens – quite a task with the continuing rain (though I’m not complaining!). We love musical metaphor so we’ll revisit the themes of rhythm, improvisation, harmony, and such as we move through this thing called LIFE. And speaking of music, there are still some seats left for our “Paths of Heart Presents…” house concert with Austin’s Jeff Plankenhorn THIS Friday (tomorrow!), June 9th here at Paths of Heart “heartquarters”, 117 Evans Dr., Fort Collins, CO 80524. See details below.
Play on! ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that’s what we are.”
~ Mickey Hart

“One can ascend to a higher development only by bringing rhythm and repetition into one’s life. Rhythm holds sway in all nature.”
~ Rudolf Steiner

“As you begin to realize that every different type of music, everybody’s individual music, has its own rhythm, life, language and heritage, you realize how life changes, and you learn how to be more open and adaptive to what is around us.”
~ Yo-Yo Ma

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”
~ Thomas Merton

Hhhmmm… What shall we talk about?

May 28th, 2023

This might be the first time (at least that we can remember) when the Sunday topic has not “presented itself” before the newsletter went out (and it’s already Saturday!). Our internet has been squirrelly all week and we’ve also been enjoying much music and merriment with Myles visiting in between band tours. SO, we at least wanted to get you the ZOOM link for this Sunday’s gathering and I’m sure something will come to us (any suggestions?)! See ya soon.

Your Next Great Adventure!

May 21st, 2023

It’s been almost a month since we last gathered and we’re just back from our great adventure (we’ll tell you all about it on Sunday!). Though we happened to take a long trip, there are so many ways to add adventure into your life, do something different, try something new and challenging. It doesn’t have to include traveling to far away places ~ adventures await in your own backyard! Seeking adventure expands our minds, provides opportunities to learn and grow, bolsters courage and self confidence, and changes the way we see and interact with others and the world around us. Let’s discuss new ways to add adventure to our lives, even on a daily basis!
Jump in! ~ Colleen and Mark

We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to travel to The Netherlands and Belgium recently! The Zest for Life

April 23rd, 2023

Wow – this year seems to be flying by (and this week, too – sorry for the late newsletter!). Since January, our lives have been filled with so much activity – music events, travel, social engagements, classes, adventure! The world has indeed “opened back up” post-pandemic and we have been seizing life by the horns, so to speak, and living fully every day. It feels good, though I must admit, it’s a bit tiring as well! We must remember balance… 🙂
How’s it going for you these days? We’re looking forward to chatting with you on Zoom and hearing about your life experiences as well! Here’s the link:

Live, laugh, love! ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“I have made it my mission to inject life into each moment, filling these moments up until they are fat and ready to burst! Life is short, it should be lived.”
~ C. JoyBell C.

“If you have zest and enthusiasm you attract zest and enthusiasm. Life does give back in kind.”
~ Norman Vincent Peale

“Cultivate the habit of zest. Purposefully seek out the beauty in the seemingly trivial. Especially in the trivial. The colors and shapes of the foods you eat. The shadows a vase makes on your table. The interesting faces of the people on the bus with you.”
~ Karen Salmansohn

“If a purpose is to be assigned to Life, it should be Living.”
~ Anand Damani

“I’ve kept alive my childlike innocence. I don’t let anything or anyone dampen my zest for life. Now, that’s very important.”
~ Mumtaz

“Paths of Heart Presents…” We have several house concerts on the horizon for all music lovers who enjoy an intimate listening room. Help us spread the word! You may pre-pay for any of these concerts on our regular donation page  https://www.pathsofheart.org/donate/ OR with Venmo @PathsofHeart. Though tickets may be available at the door, pre-paying is the only way to guarantee your seat so it’s highly suggested! Please indicate which concert you are paying for in the special instructions or memo line. Hope to see you!

Friday, June 9th – Jeff Plankenhorn, a wonderful performing songwriter hailing from Austin, TX
Sunday, July 23rd – Buddy Mondlock (a brilliant songwriter and author of “The Kid”, one of my all time favorite songs!) from Nashville, TN
Friday, August 4th – Megan Bee, our friend and songwriter artist from Athens, OH. This will be Megan’s 3rd appearance in our house concert series!

More details on all these concerts will be forthcoming, but please mark your calendars for these awesome shows and tell your friends!!

Giving Opportunities
Paths of Heart will continue to welcome and appreciate your generous donations as we work to bolster our finances and get back to Sunday gatherings at some point in the future. During the pandemic, online donations became increasingly important to our organization, and are always gratefully accepted on our website, https://www.pathsofheart.org/donate/. There is an option for recurring monthly donations, if you so choose. We have also added Venmo as a way to easily donate to Paths of Heart! Just type in @PathsofHeart to find us in the Venmo app. Thanks so much for supporting the continuation of Paths of Heart. Remember, we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, so your donations are tax deductible!

Unfortunately, it’s been covered with snow much of this winter (and spring!), but we hope the weather will be more labyrinth-friendly soon!

Gratitudes

We are grateful for the spring bulbs and flowers popping up all over and the budding of trees! Spring is “busting out all over” here in Colorado! It brings us great joy.

What are you grateful for today?

“Live a life full of humility, gratitude, intellectual curiosity, and never stop learning.”
~ GZA

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
~ John F. Kennedy

“When I pray, I always thank Mother Nature for all the beauty in the world. It’s about having an attitude of gratitude.”
~ Miranda Kerr

“This is a wonderful day. I have never seen this one before.”
~ Maya Angelou

The Miracle of Spring

April 9th, Easter Sunday 2023

Happy Easter to all! Did you know that Easter, like so many religious holidays, is one of the most intertwined with pagan symbolism and ritual? We see evidence of transformation, new life, rebirth, and increased light all around us as Spring’s miracle ushers forth. Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Easter, Spring, and our innate ability to bring about transformation within ourselves ~ planting seeds to nourish our hearts and a bright future together! Judi Lucero will be joining us in musical celebration and we’ll have a community potluck following our gathering ~ outside if the weather holds!
Celebrating miracles every day ~ Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Easter is the miracle of transformation as seen in the change of seasons, in the maturation of mortal persons, and in the resurrection of souls.”
– Richelle Goodrich

“In life, we tend to get what we expect. Start expecting the best. Since life is a do-it-to-yourself project, why not believe in miracles? You have the freedom of choice. Why not expect miracles to happen in your life? Make plans, work hard and expect miracles. Why? Because you can.”
~ Mark F. LaMoure

“For those who have a spiritual awareness, the cosmos in its entirety is a manifestation of the sacred.”
~ John Sexton

Easter…”Find it within and celebrate it. Celebrate all expressions of joy however they manifest. Even if Easter has no meaning to you at all– just another day. Another day is the most beautiful of miracles. Celebrate every minute of it however you feel called to, and allow and rejoice in others however they feel called to celebrate theirs.”
~ Spiritsong

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Paths of Heart is in the midst of a “sabbatical” from regular Sunday gatherings, though we have recently scheduled a “sprinkling” of gatherings as our financial resources improve. We miss you!! You can read more about our decision here: https://www.pathsofheart.org/2022/10/11/important-paths-of-heart-update/

As our financial situation improves, we hope to reintroduce regular Sunday gatherings, and in the meantime, we have planned several other events to keep our community engaged and thriving. See below and mark your calendars!

Sunday, March 19th, 10:30 a.m. – ZOOM Paths of Heart Gathering. See link above.

Sunday, March 26th, 2-4 p.m. -Teresa Funke and Colleen Crosson will present a “Blessings from the Pandemic” House Concert in our gathering space at 117 Evans Dr., Fort Collins. As we mark the third anniversary of the start of this unique and challenging time in our lives, they’ll reflect through written word and song on what this experience has taught us about what truly matters – individually and collectively – as humans co-existing in this complex world.

As in the past, they’ll pair some of Teresa’s inspirational blog posts — this time written during the pandemic — with uplifting songs of Colleen’s choosing that complement those written selections. Suggested ticket price is $35 and includes a copy of one of Teresa’s books or Colleen’s CDs. Your choice!

Space is limited, so RSVPs are REQUIRED, and it’s highly suggest you pay in advance to secure your seats. You can send payment through Venmo at @Colleen-Crosson or PayPal at colleencrosson@gmail.com.

The concert will run 90 minutes and be followed by light snacks and conversation so you can reveal some of your blessings as well. If you were one of the many who took up baking during the pandemic, feel free to share your favorite snack with us! We hope you can make it!!

Easter Sunday, April 9th, 10:30 a.m. – We’ll have our traditional (in-person) gathering followed by an Easter potluck (hopefully outside!). We hope Judi Lucero can join us on flute that day, too!
