Freedom,
from the inside out
With Independence Day right around the corner, we turn our thoughts to “freedom” and what that might mean to us.  Sometimes we can become prisoners of our own minds, allowing our thoughts to control our entire lives.  We are affected in each moment by the thoughts we think.  They can set us free, or hold us in painful captivity.  The choice is always up to us!
Olivia Awbrey will be our guest musician today and we’ll also have our monthly potluck directly after our gathering. Please remember to bring your own plates and utensils, as we aim for near zero waste, and bring a favorite dish to share!  We’ll provide washable cups, napkins and assorted beverages.
“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.” ~ Robert A. Heinlein

“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.” ~ Albert Camus

“I’ll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear. I mean really, no fear!” ~ Nina Simone

The Guru in You
Having a teacher or guide in any field of study or practice can be extremely valuable. “Gurus” are associated with many spiritual paths, including Hinduism and Buddhism, where they bestow spiritual experiences and knowledge upon their followers. Today we’ll explore what it means to be a guru, discuss personal experiences, and consider the possibility of being our own gurus!
“If I go into the place in myself that is love, and you go into the place in yourself that is love, we are together in love. Then you and I are truly in love, the state of being love. That’s the entrance to Oneness. That’s the space I entered when I met my guru.” ~ Ram Dass

“There are so many things that pop up. If you are paying attention, you can learn every second of the day. Life is my guru.” ~ Jeff Bridges

Father’s Day
Today we honor fathers and father energy, and like Mother’s Day, this celebration may foster tender as well as tenuous feelings.  We didn’t all have a warm, fuzzy, predictable upbringing, and we want to honor everyone in their sentiments and their struggles.  What does Father’s Day mean to you?

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person – he believed in me.” ~ Jim Valvano

Namaste
Most of us are now familiar with this Sanskrit word, literally meaning “I bow to you”.  It is used in many circles as a respectful greeting.  We’ll delve deeper into the origins of this word and its accompanying gesture and share an interesting conversation that came up earlier this week…

“Namaste means that whatever is precious and beautiful in me honors whatever is precious and beautiful in you.” ~ Debasish Mridha

“Where there is unconditional love,
there is no room for unhappiness.
Whenever I look at a human face today,
I will say to myself: “That Is The Face Of God.”
Whenever I look in the mirror today,
I will say to myself: “That Is The Face Of God.”- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Ouroboros

Suzanne Rouge will be our guest speaker this Sunday.  Her talk will include a discussion on Ouroboros ~ one of the oldest mystical symbols in the world, depicting a snake swallowing its own tail.  In alchemy, it symbolizes continuous renewal. Suzanne notes that “transmuting toxic thought into lasting transformation is an inner process we can tend to daily in order to reclaim life force energy for creative pursuits.” She will lead us through an ancient Incan breathwork technique that allows us to do just that.  Suzanne is an educator, reflexologist, artist, and author now living in Colorado’s San Luis Valley.
