Fly Like a Bird

Fly Like a Bird

As often happens, a series of small encounters led to this week’s topic, one of which was coming across a book entitled, The Art of Mindful Birdwatching, Reflections on Freedom and Being by Claire Thompson.  In the Introduction she writes, “Who has never gazed enviously at a bird soaring in the sky?  Or delighted in the uplifting tunes of nature’s songsters?  Birds are an everyday source of beauty, wisdom, and wonder…”  She expounds on their inspiration for the practice of mindfulness and also as a “symbol of our freedom to soar…”  Sounded like a perfect Paths of Heart topic to us!  Bring your birding stories to share.

Quotes to ponder

“In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” ~ Robert Lynd

“She decided to free herself, dance into the wind, create a new language. And birds fluttered around her, writing “yes” in the sky.” ~ Monique Duval

“I pray to the birds because they remind me of what I love rather than what I fear. And at the end of my prayers, they teach me how to listen.” ~ Terry Tempest Williams

“The bird dares to break the shell, then the shell breaks open and the bird can fly openly. This is the simplest principle of success. You dream, you dare and you fly.”
~ Israelmore Ayivor

Celebrating the Life and Wisdom of Dr. King

Sunday, January 19th

Celebrating the Life and Wisdom of Dr. King

Minister, activist, spokesman and leader in the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will forever be an inspiration to those who believe in and commit to equality, social justice, peace, and freedom in our world.  His passion and dedication to life was undeniable, and we remain forever changed and moved by his words and actions.  It seems we still have a long way to go to fulfill Dr. King’s dream of equality for all, yet his courage and character remain an impetus to lead our lives steeped in love, peace, and kindness.  Our celebration will include special music with Marty Rein on bass, and Cheri Nichols and Emma Sloniker joining us on vocals.  We’ll have a “Peace Potluck” after our gathering and you are invited to share your favorite poems or readings about peace during our meal together (as well as during our gathering).  Please remember to bring your own plates and utensils (we’ll provide cloth napkins, cups, and a variety of beverages) so we can have near zero waste.  Thank you!

Quotes to ponder

“I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism, but of practical realism…To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe.” ~ MLK, Jr.

“I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”
Mother Teresa

“Loving people live in a loving world.  Hostile people live in a hostile world.  But it’s the same world.” ~ Wayne Dyer

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.” ~ MLK, Jr.

On the Path of Adventure!

On the Path of Adventure!

Karen Fritz is our featured speaker this Sunday.  Endlessly fascinated with what makes people tick, Karen has degrees in Neuropsychology and Computer Science from the University of Michigan and certifications in Integral Coaching, Divine Navigation, and Awakening Coaching. She thrives on anything that brings her deeper into the experience of aliveness at the creative edge.  A tidbit from Karen, leading up to her talk: “We think of mindfulness or meditation as all calm and stillness. But what does it mean to live as meditation in motion? To bring the fullness of Awareness into every Action we take? Can’t wait to hear how true Adventure shows up for YOU!”

Quotes to ponder

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
~
Jawaharla Nehru

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”
~ Albert Einstein

Begin Again

Sunday, January 5th

Begin Again

At the start of every new year, there is talk and written word of “resolutions” everywhere.  Many of us have experienced the failings of these sometimes harsh and unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves to “do better” and “be better” at the start of each year.  And some of us have found kinder, gentler ways to create new habits and patterns we’d like to embrace: picking a single word to guide us through our year, or creating intentions and affirmations rather than rigid resolutions.  It is helpful to remind ourselves that we can “begin again” at any moment, and gently forgive ourselves for any behavior we may have beaten ourselves up for in the past.  Let’s begin again this Sunday and support one another’s journeys in these life-suits we inhabit here on Planet Earth.

Quotes to ponder

“Every moment is a fresh beginning.” ~ T.S. Eliot

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.” ~ Plato

“Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Francis Bacon Sr.

“Many years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to never make New Year’s resolutions. Hell, it’s been the only resolution I’ve ever kept!” ~ D.S. Mixell
