“Believe something and the Universe is on its way to being changed. Because you’ve changed, by believing. Once you’ve changed, other things start to follow. Isn’t that the way it works?”
~ Diane Duane

“Faith is about doing. You are how you act, not just how you believe.” ~ Mitch Albom

“Trust your own instincts, go inside, follow your heart. Right from the start. Go ahead and stand up for what you believe in.  As I’ve learned, that’s the path to happiness.” ~ Lesley Ann Warren

Leisure with Honor

In the early days of being self employed musicians, the prospect of success seemed so daunting that one was willing to take any gig at any moment just to make ends meet.  And so, vacations and leisure time were things that came about only in the absence of gainful employment – almost like a “last resort” rather than a “destination resort”…

My how we’ve grown…even if it’s only baby steps -taking a step out the door to hike, boat, bike, or hammock!  It’s a step in the right (left) direction, for it is in those moments of reflection and repose, of stillness and/or playfulness and child-like abandon that our true natures sing and dance, rejoice and renew and discover their own authentic and intrinsic song of the soul…  or in the slightly edited words of Cat Stephens, “If you want to sing out…go out!”  It’s an honorable pursuit!  Let’s share our stories of luscious leisure!

“What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows…”
~ W.H. Davies“
Leisure is only possible when we are at one with ourselves. We tend to overwork as a means of self-escape, as a way of trying to justify our existence.” ~ Josef Pieper

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between her work and her play; her labor and her leisure; her mind and her body; her education and her recreation. She hardly knows which is which. She simply pursues her vision of excellence through whatever she is doing, and leaves others to determine if she is working or playing. To herself, she always appears to be doing both.”
~ François-René de Chateaubriand

The ABCs of Gratitude
A friend once told us that when she had trouble falling asleep at night, instead of “counting sheep” she would count her blessings, starting with the letter A.  It was such a soothing practice that she rarely made it all the way through the alphabet before she was fast asleep and subsequently, woke in the morning feeling quite refreshed.  It became a common practice at our house as well, as our kids were growing up.  Last Sunday, Erin led us through a short visualization during our interdependence discussion, with gratitude as a central theme. We’ve been thinking about it all week, so naturally it progressed into this week’s topic!  Let’s explore our gratitude from A to Z!
“When it’s over, I want to say: all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.” ~ Mary Oliver

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” ~ Zig Ziglar

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” ~ Robert Brault

Interdependence Day!
As our nation prepared to celebrate Independence Day this past Wednesday, we heard about an “Interdependence Day” being celebrated in Sacramento, CA. This event brought together diverse communities, cultures and faiths to highlight and celebrate ways we can come together to initiate positive and peaceful change in our country and the world.  Sounds like Paths of Heart, right?!!  So this Sunday we’ll discuss the benefits of interdependency in this complex world we live in…
“The best relationship is one that does not foster too much independence nor too much dependence, but exists in the healthy interdependence zone.”
~ Karen Salmansohn
“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.”

~ Thomas Merton

“The further human society drifts away from nature, the less we understand interdependence.” ~ Peter Senge
