The Importance of Celebration

Sunday, June 21st

The Importance of Celebration

There are so many reasons for celebration, even amid the turmoil we may be experiencing in our personal lives, our communities, our country, and our world at this point in time.  It is always our responsibility to “be the change”, and shine our individual lights brightly, as we do our part to “right the wrongs” of larger society. Today (Friday) is Juneteenth, such an important day for us ALL to celebrate as the day that slaves on the last frontier of slavery (Texas) in the U.S. were freed. As we celebrate, let it also be a day of remembrance, reconciliation, and action, as there is still so much to be accomplished before we see true equality and justice in our world. This weekend we’ll also be celebrating the Summer Solstice (along with a new moon and a “ring of fire” solar eclipse!), Father’s Day, and our first Paths of Heart Gathering since early March! We’ll be in the back yard, well-distanced, and face masks will be required. You will also need to RSVP if you haven’t already, as we will start out small, with just 10 -15 participants. The labyrinth will be ready to walk, before and after our gathering (one at a time, please). We’ll see how this goes; we have heard from several folks that are not quite ready to attend public gatherings, while others are eager to do so. This may turn out to be an every other week event at first or…something else – more is always being revealed! If we have inclement weather, we may need to postpone and will let all that have signed up know that morning. As of today, we still have a few spots left, so RSVP soon if you want to join us!

Can’t wait to be with you, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“This is a day of celebration!
Today, we are divorcing the past
and marrying the present.
Dance,
and you will find God
in every room.
Today, we are divorcing resentment
and marrying forgiveness.
Sing,
and God will find you
in every tune.
Today, we are divorcing indifference
and marrying love.
Drink, and play that tambourine
against your thighs.
We have so much celebrating to do!”
~
Kamand Kojouri

“Every day is a good day. There is something to learn, care and celebrate.”
~
Amit Ray

“Shall we walk through the woods;
dance through the meadows;
and celebrate the miracle
of this garden world?”
~ Leland Lewis

“Heartbreak should be a celebration not mourning because it’s an opportunity to get in touch with what your current beliefs are, and an opportunity to step back in alignment with what represents your highest good.”
~ Victoria L. White

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Father’s Day, June 21st -We will return to in-person Paths of Heart Gatherings in our backyard! We will be limiting the number of people on any one Sunday, so reservations (and masks) will be required. Reply to this email or call 970-484-9600 to RSVP. We are still deciding how often we will meet.  It will most likely be once or twice a month, as we continue to monitor state and local guidelines for gatherings.

Gratitudes

We are grateful for every little bit of moisture we are experiencing from recent rains after SO many 90+ degree days!  Transplanting so many “salvaged and saved” plants (mentioned in last week’s newsletter) has been hard on the plants AND the planters!  🙂

What are you grateful for today?

Anticipation!

We are getting excited for next Sunday, June 21, when we’ll be celebrating the Summer Solstice, Father’s Day, and as many other things as we please with our first Paths of Heart Gathering since early MarchWe’ll be in the back yard, well-distanced, and face masks will be required. We have been enjoying our individual visits with folks on Sunday mornings!  It gives us some semblance of normalcy, and it feels great to feel connected in this way.  Mark and Colleen will continue to be available this Sunday on Facetime (or FB Messenger or Zoom if you prefer!) from 10:30 a.m. – noon (when we’d normally be hanging out with you at Paths of Heart), in  ~15 minute increments to simply chat or maybe share a poem or a tune with you that you love. Let us know (you can reply to this newsletter) what time (and platform) is best for you and we’ll confirm with that time or the closest available. June 14th will be the last day for these chats.

Gratitudes

This week our friend Luis came through again, notifying us of a whole yard of flowering plants that were going to be demolished and thrown in the landfill. Colleen dropped everything and made several trips to rescue so many beautiful and diverse plants and has been busy most of this week finding homes for them here and at friends’ houses.  We are grateful that we could add more beauty to our landscape and bring others joy as well!

Synchronicity!

Sunday, June 7th

Synchronicity!

We seem to be in a weird time warp…It’s Saturday night (again!) and the newsletter still isn’t done. It’s strange being on such a different (non)schedule and we’ve been tending to so many different things other than our music gigs, including joining the conversation and protests for #BlackLivesMatter. We have a better understanding now of the concept that all lives cannot matter until black lives matter. It’s important to take a stand to end the pervasive systemic racism in our country.
This week was also exciting, watching the labyrinth take shape and come nearer to completion, and then…we ran out of bricks! These are older bricks that we gathered from a job site a couple of years ago, saving them from going into the landfill. But after stacking 6 pallets full and not knowing at the time what the heck we were going to use them for, we let the rest go. They are apparently not your standard brick, and we spent most of this past week searching for a match. THEN, I went to the home of some friends whom I had not seen for many months and they had these beautiful glass blocks lined up across their front porch. “Need any glass blocks?” Terry asked, and an idea was born. They were the perfect size and now the outer ring of the labyrinth glistens in the sun like a halo, in shades of aquamarine (Colleen’s birthstone) and patterned clear glass. We were going to post a picture, but there’s still some work to be done and we just want you to meet it in person and walk it when we have our first (outdoor) Paths of Heart gathering since early March on Father’s Day, June 21st. Since we’re figuring we can only have 10 -15 participants at first, you’ll need to let us know if you plan to be here, and when the appropriate number is reached (maybe it’ll be more by then?), you’ll be added to the waiting list or be the first on the list for the following week.  We’re all in new territory and we’ll just see how this goes.
Also, if anyone would like to make a tax-deductible contribution specifically to the labyrinth project, we would be most grateful. It has been quite an undertaking!!  Our Paths of Heart family and friends will always be welcome to visit and walk the labyrinth at their leisure.

Be well and be kind,  Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

I think of the labyrinth meditation as a journey of the heart. You walk a seemingly convoluted path that ends up at the middle, or the center of your heart, and then you want to be open to what it has to say to you. Hopefully, when you’re through, you’re perhaps a little bit more open to change, and a more peaceful, loving being.” ~ Phyllis Pilgrim

“A labyrinth has only one path and you merely have to follow it. It’s a symbol of life or, rather, of life and death. Labyrinths twist and turn, but they have a beginning and an end, through darkness into light.” ~ Ariana Franklin

Pas a pas, se va luenh.
Step by step, we make our way.”

Thank you to Matthew Robinson for the long hours and creative skills he has poured into the labyrinth project!  Thanks to Luis Luna for the heads up on the bricks up for grabs 2 years ago that have now been woven into this beautiful structure, and for clearing the space with his big machine!  And thank you to Terry and Skip Polzin for inviting me to dinner that serendipitous evening where the glass blocks presented themselves.  We love synchronicity!

Gearing Up?

Sunday, May 31st

Gearing Up?

Another week, another opportunity for contemplation and decision making!  It’s been exciting seeing our Paths of Heart labyrinth project taking shape and we can’t wait for you all to join us in a meditative walk!  As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we are starting to plan for small, in-person gatherings – outside as we are able, and limited to 10 -15 participants at first. We’d love to get a feel for who is comfortable with this kind of scenario at this point in time and get other feedback and ideas you might have for us. We are considering Father’s Day, June 21st, for our first gathering. Our son Myles is returning from NYC this coming week, and this will give us some quarantine time to make sure all is well before we invite others over. Please take some time to contemplate this with us and make known your interest and thoughts. We look forward to seeing your shining eyes on your masked faces! As distressing events continue to swirl around us, we invite you to do your part to be a light in this world, standing for justice, peace, equality, kindness, and love.
Be well, safe, and of service,  Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

Today we are drawing inspiration from our Paths friends who have posted meaningful quotes on Facebook  recently.

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” ~ Maya Angelou

“In this house we believe: Black lives matter, love is love, science is real, feminism is for everyone, no human is illegal, and kindness is everything.” ~ unattributed

“When you realise HEART and EARTH are spelled with the same letters, it all starts to make sense” ~ Jennifer Bramley

“Grandfather says: When you feel powerless, that’s because you stopped listening to your heart; that’s where power comes from.” ~ Gianni Crow

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

As noted above, we have begun to contemplate how we might achieve an in-person gathering, and meeting in the spaciousness of the backyard comes to mind.  It’ll take some doing, setting up a sound system and electronic keyboard, etc., but we are up for the task if it means we can finally have a gathering, albeit socially distanced and sans hugging!  Stay tuned for more definitive plans.
We have also begun the Paths of Heart labyrinth project in the front yard, and though we had hoped for it to be a community project, it is being built mostly by our good friend and artist, Matthew Robinson  (in the picture at the top of this newsletter!).

A Mountain Respite

Sunday, May 24th

A Mountain Respite

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!  We hope you all can do something fun, even as it might be vastly different from your typical Memorial Day festivities. Let us also take time to remember the origin of this holiday and to honor our military service members who died while serving our country.
The downward slope of the roller coaster returned this week and I (Colleen) was again feeling depressed and with a bit of a “short fuse”, flustered at even the simplest of tasks or decisions.  We decided a trip into the mountains might restore our souls, and boy howdy, did it!  We took a day trip up Poudre Canyon (Emma, too!) and were delighted, awed, and calmed by the many manifestations of Mother Nature.  The river was wildly raging, the wildflowers were an explosion of color, the birds entertained us with flight and song, and everything was again right with the world.  It was once again a reminder of how this earth still spins in all its granduer, and if we stay present to the moment, all is indeed well in the grand design.  We hope you are all hanging in there and that we will be able to be together soon.  We are contemplating having an outdoor gathering in the Paths of Heart backyard, maybe within the next few weeks!
Be well, friends,  Colleen and Mark

A Poem to ponder

“MAGNITUDE of EXISTENCE
U are a dot
A point
A speck
An image
A stillness
A shadow
A centrifugal force
Turning into itself
Emanating heat
Emanating light
You are a transient warmth
Wave like u exist
Resonating properties
As body
As mind
As heart
As human
You are
One dot in trillions exponentially
Sifting through motion
Expressed as e=motion
You are engulfed in water
From the inside out
Wrapped in the Arms of giver of air
Held ephemerally by the heart of sky
In suspended attraction to the wooing of earth
You are reflecting ash taken to travel
Bathing in sun rays
Resting as moonlight
You are a resonant echo
Given to name matter
Bouncing dot like
You are a distance timber
Specified to forms
A mountain
A valley
A hill
A meadow
A dune
A desert
Exacting measure
You Are
A magnitude of existences

Seeds of Change

Sunday, May 17th

Seeds of Change

This past week has been a busy one, continuing to amend and prepare the soil in our vegetable garden beds for this season’s planting, hoeing short rows in the raised beds, and setting a variety of seeds in the furrows. As I cover the seeds and firm the soil around them, I am reminded of Mark Nepo’s “The Book of Awakening” and his anology of the seeds cracking open in the dark, surrendering to a process they can’t see. Each spring, I remain in awe as I watch those tiny, tender seedlings break through the hard crust of soil, searching..reaching for the light. Nepo says, “By nature, we are all quietly given countless models of how to give ourselves over to what appears dark and hopeless, but which ultimately is an awakening that is beyond all imagining. This moving through the dark into blossom is the threshold to God.”
We hold on to these hopeful words in this ever changing world, seeing the beauty through the chaos. No matter what is happening in our humanness, Mother Earth continues to teach us. The glories and wonderment of spring are still happening. We encourage you to take delight in it. The fragrance of the opening lilac blossoms in this morning’s gentle wind were swoon-worthy. The birds are still singing. “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” ~ Julian of Norwich

Quotes to ponder

“As a seed buried into the earth cannot imagine itself as an orchid or hyacinth, neither can a heart packed with hurt imagine itself loved or at peace. The courage of the seed is that once cracking, it cracks all the way.” ~ Mark Nepo

The Seed Cracked Open
It used to be
That when I would wake in the morning
I could with confidence say,
“What am ‘I’ going to
Do?”
That was before the seed
Cracked open.
Now Hafiz is certain:
There are two of us housed
In this body,
Doing the shopping together in the market and
Tickling each other
While fixing the evening’s food.
Now when I awake
All the internal instruments play the same music:
“God, what love-mischief can ‘We’ do
For the world
Today?” ~ Hafiz (translated by Daniel Ladinsky)

“How amazing is it that you are being supported towards the continuous practice of self care, including empowerment, through spending so much more time with yourself, the ones you live with and love so dearly. And, this is happening all over the world, just like Spring is flourishing at home, in your community and across the globe.” ~ Annie L. Breau

Testing the Waters

Sunday, May 10th

Testing the Waters

Hello dear friends ~ How are you all doing this week? It’s amazing to me that the weeks go by so quickly, even as time also seems to be at a standstill. Life is full of those kinds of dichotomies these days…I woke from my Covid dreams with the birds at 4:44 this morning, similar to each morning this week. I try to go back to sleep, and am usually successful, though my mind is flooded with a myriad of thoughts about family, friends, unemployment, our next steps in this pandemic world. I ordered 3 more masks yesterday from a friend who is making them and donating all proceeds to a different organization each week, like the WHO Covid-19 Solidarity Fund, and the First Responders Children’s Foundation (thank you, Ruth and Hannah!). Wearing masks seems like such a small “sacrifice” to make as we start to re-enter public spaces and dip our toes into the waters of the larger community, and I am shocked and saddened by the anger and violence against this simple gesture that is surfacing in some parts of our country. The meme going around the interwebs these days conveys my feelings well on the matter: “The mask I wear to protect you recognizes and honors the mask you wear to protect me” ~ NAMASKE. (Thanks Beth and Stacey!). For me, it has nothing to do with fear, as some might suggest, but everything to do with respect and care for others. We are all in this together. I love you! Colleen

Yes, this time in the world is like no other that I’ve (ever) experienced so far (in 64 years)! There’s that Beatles song…”Will you still need me? Will you still feed me? When I’m sixty four…” and I’ve been singing it around the house, mostly to myself but sometimes out loud. And Colleen’s answer, in many humorous forms, is always YES! And I rewrite the lyrics in my head and serenade her with my best British-Ringo accent and affirm that I too, will (and do) need her AND appreciate her at (pick a number, but especially) 64! And that idea of human kindness flows out of my mind and heart in all directions to all aquaintances AND nonaquaintances…and reminds me that kindness and compassion is one of the greatest gifts we can share in any moment AND especially in moments like these! I will wear my mask for our mutual well being but please know that there is a big smile under it, that very much appreciates You ALL…Namaske! Mark

With gratitude and love and wishes for a Happy Mother’s Day,
C & M

Quotes to ponder

“As we sail thru life, don’t avoid rough waters, sail on because calm waters won’t make a skillful sailor.” ~ Unknown

“Love is a river who’s waters we test
And a measure of where we are going
But you never can step in the same river twice
For the water is constantly flowing
But the deeper the river, the greater the trust
And the more that we’re rising above…” ~ David Roth, Rising in Love

“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers,
but to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but
for the heart to conquer it.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

And Still, We Find a Way…

And Still, We Find a Way…

What a beautiful week it’s been. Even amidst all the sadness and hardship this virus has created in our world, people are adapting and persevering, and finding new, creative, and loving ways to connect and gather. Just this morning we watched a live feed of a wedding (Congratulations Valerie and Brandon!!) ~ very different than the one originally planned, but nonetheless indescribably beautiful. It brought laughter and tears and stirred memories of all our years together, not unlike if we’d been able to travel back east and gather in ceremony in person. The bride and groom’s parents watched from different parts of the country, and were “present” on phones set up on tripods so the couple could see them as well. It will no doubt be one of the most memorable weddings we will ever witness in our lifetimes (we wonder if they are still looking for the groom’s ring, which Kosey, the dog ring bearer, lost somewhere in the woods!)!
Yesterday, we participated in a memorial service for one of our Paths community members (our deepest condolences on the loss of your mother, Ann). We were able to provide music in person, though the number of participants was severely restricted, and only 2 people were allowed graveside. Still, maybe because of the restrictions, Betty’s Celebration of Life took on an even greater beauty and significance.
While on the way to the service, we were surprised at a stoplight, when a woman in the car in front of us jumped out of the driver’s seat and up to our window, handing us a small cup of treats with a May Day poem in it ~ “So tired of staying at home, You know we’d rather roam, But we bring you some cheer, ‘Cause May is here! Happy May Day!” To our astonishment and delight, it was actually someone we knew (thank you, Con and Rhonda!), though of course there was no time for words, as the light turned green! What sweet serendipity! And later in the day, we were delivered another May Day gift at our home ~ a viola plant, some flower seeds, a small stone with a message of hope and love, and another May Day poem (thank you, Becky!).
There’s one more poignant and beautiful moment in time we’d like to share from this past week. A group of masked friends gathered (socially distanced) outside the family home of a friend who has just entered hospice. We all signed a huge banner with messages of love and gratitude for all the joy our friend has brought us over the years. At 8 pm, we howled together (as has become the custom in recent weeks), then held up the sign, lit sparklers and candles, and danced wildly to live music (thanks, Dave!) outside our friend’s window (sending so much love B, J, and family!). What a privilege it was to take part in this touching ritual.
Oh, my…such an outpouring of love, kindness, and generosity we bore witness to this week. And we know there are stories like this happening and being shared every day all over the world. This is what we need right now ~ to shine our lights and be there for others in their time of need. As Carrie Newcomer reminds us, “We can do this hard thing” (sending love and light, Deb!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRGnftH_g4I

With gratitude and love,
Colleen and Mark

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

We’re going to try something new this week! Starting this Sunday, May 3rd, Mark and Colleen will be available each Sunday on Facetime from 10:30 a.m. – noon (when we’d normally be hanging out with you at Paths of Heart).
We’d love to visit with you individually in 10-15 minute increments to just visit or maybe share a poem or a tune that you love. Let us know (you can reply to this newsletter) what time is good for you and we’ll confirm with that time or the closest available. Depending on demand, if all the slots fill up for this week, you’ll be first in line next week! We’ll see how this goes and where it might lead…More is always being revealed!

Gratitudes

We are truly grateful for all the support we’ve had in the past 6 weeks in donations through the mail and on Paypal, even from folks who have never attended Paths of Heart in person. Wow!! It warms our heart that our gatherings and even just our newsletters are an important part of your week and that they bring you inspiration and solace during these days of isolation. Thank you!

This Tuesday, May 5th has been designated #GivingTuesdayNow, a new global day of giving and unity (in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday) serving as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Instead of asking for your donations to Paths of Heart (as you’ve been so generous already!), we invite you to give to other charities that are addressing more immediate needs of folks in this challenging time. Isolation Blues?

Isolation Blues?

Weekend greetings to you all ~ We’ve been hearing and seeing lots of comments here and there about how the isolation is getting to folks.  How ’bout you?  And what (if anything) are you doing about it?  Even though the “stay at home order” in Colorado is being lifted on Monday, the general consensus is that we’re still “safer at home”, so that feeling of isolation may linger for a while longer.  It’s tough for those of us that thrive on human touch to refrain from hugging friends and family, or to be intimate with those we’re in relationship with, but don’t live with.  Allow yourself to grieve these things; perhaps journal or meditate on it.  Immerse yourself in nature if you can.  We felt so much better this week after taking a “socially-distanced” hike with some friends, and we’ve been out in the kayaks a time or two.  It was exhilerating!  Above all, keep being kind to yourself and others.  This, too, shall pass, but the love remains.

You’re in our hearts,
Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Sometimes all it takes to brighten up someone’s day is a smile or kind word, or the generous actions of a complete stranger. Small things, the tiny details, these are the things that matter in life…” ~ Shaun Hick

“It might behoove us to realize that isolation is the absence of all the senseless clutter, and all the incessant racket that would keep God from having ample room to show up and sufficient silence to be heard. Therefore, isolation may actually be the place where we are least isolated.” ~ Craig Lounsbrough

“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.” ~ Maya Angelou

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

As we look longingly toward a time when we can be together again, we are content with our recent decision not to pursue Paths of Heart Zoom meetings. Thank you for all the notes we’ve gotten affirming to “let that one go!” As one Paths attendee stated (while encouraging us to be kind to ourselves), “Right now, we’re inundated with more online connections and resources than I can manage, and that’s probably true for many other people at Paths.” She had a great suggestion as an alternative ~ anyone who’s been inspired by something they’ve seen on the internet could send us links and we’ll include them in subsequent newsletters. Here’s a video she sent that might remind you of Paths of Heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIm23dJ5Jz8&list=RD-Kf-9kx_oSg&index=7

Walking in Gratitude

Walking in Gratitude

Greetings dear ones ~ This week seems to have zoomed by (ha ha!) and mostly our minds and hearts have been focused on gratitude.  After the last 2 roller coaster weeks, we were grateful to catch this post by friend and fellow musician, Michelle (Dalziel) Ingrham which noted, “I’m sure I am like so many of you. Some days are harder than others. I feel like crying all the hours of the day because I feel helpless, and other days I feel accomplished and grateful for the gifts God has given me that sustain me. All in all I am grateful for my life and I know this is all temporary and I’m not alone… It is ok to feel all the things we feel through this! It is ok! I think I broke down like 10 times on Saturday, trying to do simple everyday tasks. I’m ok with that because I know it’s not the tasks, it’s the edge of everything!  Just know that I have ugly cried and I have belly laughed just like many of you have. We truly are in this together!”
WOW – same here!  This really helped us put these last few weeks in perspective and led us back to that beautiful state of gratitude, knowing that ultimately – in the grand scheme of this mysterious and magnificent universe – things don’t happen to us, but happen for us (though we KNOW it’s often hard to accept that when we’re in the thick of things!).  We can acknowledge our despair and grief, while at the same time knowing that in everything there is a lesson, and we can be grateful for that teaching. Our response to circumstances can make us bitter, or better, human beings.  AND It’s ok to have a bad day some days.  (that’s a link to a song Michelle wrote about the subject!).

“Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final”
~ Rainer Maria Rilke

In gratitude for it ALL,
Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Mutual awakening is the bridge between our experience as separate individuals and a collective, even global, experience of Oneness. We’re so trained in seeing ourselves as separate selves that it takes a powerful, direct experience to unwind centuries-old habits of individuality and really KNOW that we are connected in a profound field of loving awareness.” ~ Stephen Dinan

“When, as counselors and friends, we observe depression in others and are challenged to find a way to deal with it, we could abandon the notion that life always has to be cheerful. We recognize that melancholy can instruct us and be a place of acceptance and containment.” ~ Thomas Moore, Care of the Soul

“Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will comfort every corner of your life.” ~ Rumi

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

As we look longingly toward a time when we can be together again, we are content with our recent decision not to pursue Paths of Heart Zoom meetings.  It simply doesn’t feel like a match for us. Here is one of hers, of Canadian female physicians in a virtual choir, singing “We Rise Again.”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuiqee-AC-o

Very moving!

Be well, and be kind and gentle with yourselves and others, till we meet again!
