Relax, Restore, Renew!

Sunday, August 4th

Relax, Restore, Renew!

Everyone needs some time periodically to pull back from the busyness of life and just breathe…whether that means right where you are, in your own backyard, across town, or across the world.  Mark and Colleen took a little respite this week in the lovely mountain town of Hot Sulphur Springs.  Rest, soaks, massages, reading, and strolling were the orders of the day, with very little agenda.  They have come back recharged and refreshed and ready to discuss the benefits of such moments, no matter how brief.  We hope you’ll “take a little time” with us this Sunday morning!

P.S. Sorry for the “tardiness” of this newsletter!  Crafting a newsletter by Wednesday/Thursday was, of course, not on the vacation “agenda”, and we didn’t return till Friday afternoon (just in time to perform with the whole family at The Sunset Lounge!).  Back to the busyness – ha ha!

Quotes to ponder

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” ~ John Lubbock

“A holiday is an opportunity to journey within. It is also a chance to chill, to relax. It is when I switch on my rest mode.” ~ Prabhas

“The purpose of a vacation is to have the time to rest. But many of us, even when we go on vacation, don’t know how to rest. We may even come back more tired than before we left.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

“Paths of Heart Presents…” House Concert Series – After a bit of a break, we have several concerts planned that we’re really excited about.  The concert with Brian David Collins last week was phenomenal!  Thanks to all who came to support Brian and his heartfelt original music.  Mark your calendars to hear the rest of these scheduled and wonderful local and nationally touring artists!

Saturday, August 17th – Megan Bee with OMD (Our Mothers’ Daughters reunion!).  OMD is the popular a cappella group that Colleen has sung with for the past 30+ years!  They haven’t performed much over the last decade, so this will be a rare treat!  Former and current members are traveling from all over the country (NY, FL, MN, MI) to sing and play (in the varied sense of the word!) together. Megan Bee is a fun and talented Athens, OH based singer-songwriter that has performed at Paths of Heart two other times to an enthusiastic audience. Since her scheduled house concert date coincided with the serendipitous reunion of OMD, she has graciously invited us to share the stage with her.  Suggested donation is $20 at the door and we’ll have a finger food and beverage potluck during intermission. Concert starts at 7.  Come early to grab a seat and please spread the word!

Saturday, Oct. 5th – The Home Fires
Saturday, Oct. 19th – Tracy Grammer

Good Luck/Bad Luck?

Sunday, July 28th

Good Luck/Bad Luck?

Continuing along our themes of destiny and taking chances, how many times have we found ourselves judging an event or circumstance as “good” or “bad”, only to realize it wasn’t necessarily so in the long run?  Things aren’t always as they seem and it may be true that events have no inherent meaning; we humans tend to add those.  Come join us for this thought provoking topic.

Quotes to ponder

“If you think about it, we really don’t have experiences in life.  We have reactions to our experiences.”
~ Christen Scott

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
~ Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr

Taking Chances

Sunday, July 21st

Taking Chances

Most weeks here at Paths of Heart we land on a topic to discuss and then pick music to compliment it.  Since Brian David Collins will be our featured music guest this week, we decided to center our theme around some of the songs that he might play on Sunday.  We’re taking a chance here – ha ha!  Come hear/see what transpires and join the conversation.  Remember, our monthly potluck is this Sunday, too!  See details below.

Quotes to ponder

“Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?”
~ Jimmy Johnson

“To live, to TRULY live, we must be willing to RISK. To be nothing in order to find everything. To leap before we look.” ~ Mandy Hale

“Even the smallest changes in our daily routine can create incredible ripple effects that expand our vision of what is possible.” ~ Charles F. Glassman

Awakening Your Destiny

Sunday, July 14

Awakening Your Destiny

This week’s discussion is based in part on John O’Donohue’s writings about fulfilling your destiny.  O’Donohue writes that, “Each one of us has something to do here that can be done by no one else.”  Some might use the word “destiny” interchangeably with “fate”, but there appears to be distinct differences.  Reflect on your ideas of these concepts and join the conversation!

Quotes to ponder

“There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be…”
~
John Lennon

“When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.” ~ Andrew Boyd

“Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?” ~ Garth Nix

Embracing Ritual

Sunday, July 7th

Embracing Ritual
Ritual is usually associated with religion, but if we look within our own personal lives, we often see that they’re filled with activities of a ritualistic nature. We’ll look at the origin of ritual, and explore how ritual affects and enhances our everyday lives.

Quotes to ponder

“Like music and art, rituals can open our hearts to new possibilities. They allow us to see with a fresh clarity, and bring us to a space of liminality.” ~ Lucy Aitkenread

“For me, starting the day without a pot of tea would be a day forever out of kilter.”
~ Bill Drummond

“The human soul can always use a new tradition. Sometimes we require them.”
~ Pat Conroy

The Path to Freedom

Sunday, June 30th
The Path to Freedom
With Independence Day approaching, we thought we’d revisit the multi-faceted concept of freedom.  We all want to “live free”, and sometimes we nevertheless create prisons of our own making!  What are your experiences of living a life of freedom, and what wisdom can you impart to otherswho are feeling “stuck” as they seek a more enjoyable, freedom-filled life?

Quotes to ponder
“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people….every day.”
David Foster Wallace

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.”  ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Spontaneity!

Sunday, June 23rd
Spontaneity!

This Sunday, Colleen is “flying solo”, as Mark and Myles will be off playing a benefit gig.  But she might NOT end up flying solo, as she’s got some ideas up her sleeve.  But we don’t know which ideas are going to “fly” along with her, so it’ll be a surprise!  Don’t you love being spontaneous at times?  It’s a very freeing feeling, not being tied to one thing or another.  Come be a part of the magic!

Quotes to ponder

“No matter how many plans you make or how much in control you are, life is always winging it.” ~ Carroll Bryant

“Through spontaneity we are re-formed into ourselves.” ~ Viola Spolin

“If you follow a recipe for life, spontaneity will be cooked.” ~ Khang Kijarro Nguyen

“Spontaneity is one of the joys of existence, especially if you prepare for it in advance.” ~ Alan Dean Foster

Father’s Day

Sunday, June 16th
Father’s Day

We’ll be honoring Father Energy in its many forms this Sunday.  What does it take to make a father?  Well, a mother and kids sure help (among other things, like, for example: ties, cigars, golf clubs, Cardigans, Izod shirts, fishing gear)… 🙂  BUT maybe there’s something else in this quotient that’s beyond apparel…What does fatherhood mean to you?  Bring your memories and insights!

Quotes to ponder

“I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by the little scraps of wisdom.” ~ Umberto Eco

“Being a father has been, without a doubt, my greatest source of achievement, pride and inspiration. Fatherhood has taught me about unconditional love, reinforced the importance of giving back and taught me how to be a better person.” ~ Naveen Jain

“To her, the name of father was another name for love.” ~ Fanny Fern

The Path of Passionate Living

Sunday, June 2nd
The Path of Passionate Living

I don’t know about you, but the warming weather has a way of ramping up our passions around here!  Colleen loves gardening, kayaking, hiking, and outdoor music opportunities, and although Mark would probably replace bike rides with gardening, he thrives on all the aforementioned activities, too.  Excitement is in the air as the weather and schedules shift to summer mode!  What are you passionate about and what drives your motivation?  How do you keep your passion alive?  Do your passions change over time?  How are passion and purpose intertwined?  Please join us in the conversation!

Quotes to ponder

“The presence of passion within you is the greatest gift you can receive. Treat it as a miracle.”  ~  Wayne Dyer“Everything I do is part of my passion. I do the things I like to do. It’s sort of a bigger version of having more than one hobby…”  ~  Harry Connick, Jr.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” ~  Maya Angelou

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”  ~  Oprah Winfrey

Planting Seeds

Sunday, May 26th
Planting Seeds

Continuing to take our cues from Nature’s Playbook, we’ll explore the concept of planting seeds as it relates to our creative and spiritual lives.  As gardeners, we fully expect seeds to grow if we plant them at the right depth, in fertile soil, and patiently nurture them with the right amount of water, sunshine, and tender care.  Seeds are great metaphors for new ideas, behaviors, and life possibilities that we wish to grow and harvest. As we plant, so shall we reap…

Quotes to ponder

“Keep planting new seeds until your mind becomes the earth that gives birth to new worlds.” ~ Curtis Tyrone Jones“If you plant junk, don’t expect to harvest jewels.” ~ Luke Taylor

“The fact that I can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes another’s, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, are to me continual spiritual exercises.”  ~ Leo Buscaglia

“Every leaf that grows will tell you: what you sow will bear fruit, so if you have any sense my friend, don’t plant anything but Love.” ~ Rumi
