This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful; in a word, more alive. ~ Alice Waters

Community
It feels like our chosen communities are our saving grace these days ~ our “safe place” as we sang about last Sunday…a place of tolerance, acceptance, and love where we can be ourselves and feel supported.  What roles do your various ‘communities’ have in your lives?
And what better way to celebrate our Paths of Heart community than with a potluck, immediately following our gathering!  Details are below in the “Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest” section.  See you Sunday!

“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.”~ Dean Ornish

“I know there is strength in the differences between us. I know there is comfort, where we overlap.”
~ Ani DiFranco

“We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” ~ Dorothy Day

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Sunday, October 14th – Our next community potluck (immediately following our gathering)! The weather forecast does not look great, so we’ll probably be inside (we’ll even crank up the wood stove for an extra cozy feel!).  Bring a yummy dish to share if possible, and also remember to bring your own washable plate and utensils, as we aim for zero waste (we do have extras if you forget!).  We’ll provide cups, cloth napkins, and a variety of beverages. Let’s ‘break bread’ together!

Tuesday, October 23rd – Our next Song Circle, 7 pm. Bring your voice and an instrument if you’d like.  We come together to sing songs of joy, love, peace, hope, kindness ~ whatever lifts us up!  We’ll have tea and a few snacks to share.  Love offerings to Paths of Heart are gratefully received.

King Soopers Neighborhood Reward Gift Cards – We are excited to have joined King Soopers fundraising gift card program!  When you use your Paths of Heart Gift Card, 5% of your total purchases are rewarded to Paths of Heart.  It does not cost you anything extra – simply load your gift card at the check-out with any amount (up to $500) before you buy your groceries.  We have cards with an initial amount of $10 loaded on them.  This is a really easy way to support Paths of Heart!  Thank you!

We invite you to visit our website, www.pathsofheart.org. There you’ll find past newsletters, a newsletter sign-up form, more about our organization, a photo gallery, and a ‘donate’ button, for those who prefer to donate to our non-profit with a credit card .  Stop by for a visit and please share with friends!

Loving Kindness

It seems the world is a little less kind these days, and we’ve forgotten ‘who we are’ as humans.  The fallout from this divisiveness is rampant everywhere.  Let’s explore together how to fall back IN to loving kindness, and live up to the moniker of ‘Humankind’ once more.

“Souls love. That’s what souls do. Egos don’t, but souls do. Become a soul, look around, and you’ll be amazed – all the beings around you are souls. Be one, see one.” ~ Ram Dass

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

TONIGHT! Thursday, October 4th – “Paths of Heart Presents…” a house concert with “The Home Fires” ~ an Americana duo based in Minneapolis comprised of critically acclaimed singer/songwriters, Sarah Morris and Vicky Emerson. Sarah and Vicky are established touring artists and after developing a close friendship and playing live shows together, they unearthed a gorgeous new sound featuring Sarah’s clear, melodic voice and Vicky’s warm, weathered harmony. They are working towards releasing a debut effort for their duo in the spring of 2019.  We’ll start this evening at 6 pm with a potluck, followed by the concert at 7 pm.  Sarah and Vicky will do one long set, so we won’t keep you out too late on a “work/school” night!  Suggested donation is $20 at the door, though it is always your decision what to donate.  RSVPs are appreciated! 970-484-9600 or info@pathsofheart.org.

Assumptions

You know what they say about when you “assume” something, right?  Well, we’ll tell you this Sunday, if you don’t know!  Frank Bonifazi, who was originally scheduled to be with us last week, has assured us (what a difference one letter makes – ha!) that he’ll be here this Sunday, treating us to a new song and sharing some thoughts, along with Mark and Colleen, on “the assumptions we make about people”.  As always, you are invited to join in on the conversation!

“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.”
~ Isaac Asimov

“Ask if you need to, but don’t assume. Sometimes our bad feelings are only assumptions and speculations doing dark dances in our heads.”

Flexibility

UPDATE for this Sunday at Paths of Heart!

Hello again!  Alas, shortly after sending out the newsletter for this Sunday, we learned Frank Bonifazi would not be able to join us this Sunday for our “Assumptions” topic after all.  Kind of ironic, huh?!  What to do…what to do?  Well, talk about flexibility, of course!  Life often throws us a curve ball, and we have to “punt” so to speak, or change course mid-stream.  We hope Frank will be able to join us next week, but we’ll remain flexible on that, too and not assume anything till we hear from him…Hope you’ll join us in the flow of things…

We also wanted to take the opportunity while here (since we neglected to in the newsletter!) to thank Terry and Serena Bieritz for a lovely “Oktoberfest” evening, with great food, conversation and Terry’s slide show of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland!  What a fun time!

In the Garden
For those of you on Facebook, you may be noticing the increase in posts and pictures of abundant garden harvesting!  Our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is also overflowing with garden goodness.  Several weeks back, our friend, Shannon gave us a big plaque, titled “In the Garden” with fun little sayings like ‘Plant Dreams’, ‘Harvest Love’, ‘Live Life in Full Bloom’…We’ll take a look at all these phrases together and see how we can apply them to our lives.  Gardening really IS the perfect metaphor for life!
We’ll also be having our potluck immediately after our gathering. We invite you to bring something yummy from your garden if you choose!  Of course, anything you bring to share is most welcome.  Remember to bring your own washable plate and utensils, as we aim for zero waste (we do have extras if you forget!).  We’ll provide cups, cloth napkins, and a variety of beverages.  Hope to see you here!

Living in Two Worlds

Mark and Emma Sloniker will lead the discussion this week (Colleen is visiting her sister in Oregon!).  As we experience these “in-between” days of the seasons, transitioning from summer to fall (and experiencing the beauty of both!), we are reminded of the many ways that we live in 2 worlds – one of daily “doings”, the tangible here and now, and the other, a “timeless space of infinite grace”.  Some might call it the “worldly” and the “other worldly”.  Let’s explore these worlds together!

“It seems, something inside us persistently wants to believe in things, unexplainable by words.”
~ Mladen Đorđević

“What you knew in your childhood is true; the Otherworld of magic and enchantment is real…and certainly more real than the factual reality which our culture has built up, brick by brick, to shut out colour and light and prevent us from flying.” ~ Patrick Harpur

“We don’t have the capacity to understand the great mysteries of life and God or no God or infinity, we just can’t get it. It’s beyond us, but that’s fine. We’re not meant to get that. But the pursuit is so interesting…it’s life sustaining and I think when you lose the interest in that pursuit you’re finished.” ~ Paul Simon

Aligning Thought, Words, and Action
Colleen (and several other “Paths” folks) attended a “Better Angels” workshop this past week, where we learned/reviewed skills for difficult personal conversations.  While this workshop was focused on political conversations, many of us commented how useful these skills can be for navigating ALL of life’s situations and relationships!  This got us thinking about our thoughts, words, and actions in general and how important it is to align all three as we strive to become better human beings in this sometimes topsy-turvy world.  Let’s converse!

“The more we align our words and our deeds, the clearer we are in expressing our truth in the world, and the more powerful we are in bringing it into reality.” ~ Madisyn Taylor

“Authenticity is the alignment of head, mouth, heart, and feet – thinking, saying, feeling, and doing the same thing – consistently.” ~ Lance Secretan

“True freedom is where an individual’s thoughts and actions are in alignment with that which is true, correct, and of honor – no matter the personal price.” ~ Bryant H. McGill

Transitions
This “back to school” time of year can somehow evoke a flood of memories and stir a wide range of feelings within us, even for those who are no longer tied to the “school year”.  The picture to the left was taken some years ago now, on our return trip from NYC, “delivering” our son, Myles (and his huge bass; otherwise, we might have sent him by plane!) to his chosen school for his last 2+ years of college.  Ah, the memories of embracing that change…
Transitions can happen anytime along the path of life ~ some are consciously chosen, others not, and while often challenging, they never fail to teach us something about ourselves while providing fertile opportunities for growth.

“A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it.” ~ Nikki Giovanni”There’s a little bit of pain in every transition, but we can’t let that stop us from making it. If we did, we’d never make any progress at all.” ~ Phil Schiller

“Times of transition are strenuous, but I love them. They are an opportunity to purge, rethink priorities, and be intentional about new habits. We can make our new normal any way we want.”
~ Kristin Armstrong

In the Silence

Our apologies for this “late edition” of the newsletter!  We (Colleen, Mark, Emma, and Ethan) spent most of this past week in the mountains, where we did a lot less talking and a lot more looking and listening – mostly to the sights and sounds of nature as we sat in silence and awe.  We delighted in singing birds, chattering squirrels and chipmunks, distant frogs, majestic bucks and meandering moose.  There was such a feeling of contentment with no agenda (and no cell phone service!) for several days, with time to just sit, or read, or work on a challenging jigsaw puzzle, or take a hike or bike ride – whenever the spirit moved us.  It’s rather amusing to decide to “talk about silence”, but we’ll review the many benefits, and surely leave some space and time for sitting together in silent meditation.

“Everything that’s created comes out of silence. Your thoughts emerge from the nothingness of silence. Your words come out of this void. Your very essence emerged from emptiness. All creativity requires some stillness.” ~ Wayne Dyer

“Meditation is to be aware of every thought and of every feeling, never to say it is right or wrong, but just to watch it and move with it. In that watching, you begin to understand the whole movement of thought and feeling. And out of this awareness comes silence.” ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
